Singham Movie Review

Singham Rating 2.88/5

Singham isn’t an unwatchable film, but how many times can you watch bad guys being whipped with a belt? Or heads being pummeled by a bare fist? There is such a thing as overkill, after all. I’m going with two out of five for director Rohit Shetty’s Singham. I suspect it’s going to make a load of money; I only wish it was a better film. Ajay Devgan fans however won’t be disappointed.

SINGHAM is the remake of the Tamil hit SINGAM, a role made memorable by the towering talent Suriya. On the whole, SINGHAM is a full-on masala film that works big time for varied reasons: The energetic drama, the terrific confrontations, the raw stunts and of course, for the three 'heroes' -- Ajay Devgn, Prakash Raj and director Rohit Shetty. It's a complete package of entertainment for the masses and devoted fans of masala movies. In short, SINGHAM works as an entertainer, a complete package and if I may say so, it's Rohit Shetty's best work so far.

Singham is such a mighty blast from the past, it leaves you reeling under its impact. Designed as a tribute to the pure, unadulterated action films of the Bachchan era, where a larger-than-life hero battled a mega-evil villain, with nothing but his principles and his bare fists, Rohit Shetty's retro film leaves you goofy, grinning and clapping with glee as the rivals indulge in in-your-face encounters, laced with in-your-face action, peppered with in-your-face dialogues, brimming over with in-your-face belligerence and brawn. Truly, Singham leaves nothing to the imagination and makes a singular appeal to testosterone alone.

We've seen it all before, and Singham's another time machine set up to take us back into the 1980s, Hindi cinema's most ghastly decade. Devgn's a tough, superheroic small-town policeman with a heart of gold and a near-permanent scowl, and he's come to the big city to take on a villain so vile he chokes children he kidnaps with his bare hands. But where does Singham stand on the Dabangg scale, I'm asked. Yes, there apparently is a new measure for tripe conveniently labelled larger-than-life. It's okay, strictly.

Singham, aimed at those who like their cinema stirred and shaken in familiar and simple ways, is a rare cop-and-crook drama that carries little excess baggage.Singham is refreshingly crisp and utterly uncluttered all the way through to the bitter end. It does take a few minutes to warm up, but once it does, there’s no stopping Singham.Singham is an old-fashioned but rousing Hindi commercial film that pretty much restores one’s faith in this often-maligned brand of cinema. It has super-duper hit written all over it.

What’s Good: Fast-paced screenplay; out-of-the-world confrontation scenes; extraordinary dialogues; performances par excellence; superb action.
What’s Bad: Nothing really!
Verdict: Singham is a surefire hit, packed with power-packed performances, powerful dialogues and wonderful dialogues.

The action, designed by Shetty himself, makes you want to giggle and at crucial points you can’t help but LOL at the gravity-defying moves the Singham(lion) pulls off. The premise of the film is not new and hence some peppy dialogue could have done wonders. But we get corniest of corny dialogues. Rohit Shetty demonstrates his ability as a filmmaker of the comic genre as he manages to take an action-packed cop film and makes it into a shrill, gaudy and a mildly laughable flick. And the worst part is, he didn’t intend for it to be that way.If you’re looking for an action film to entertain you this weekend, Singham isn’t that film. This wannabe Dabangg is at best a comic film but there are so many other options that could do the job much better. Give this one a miss.

Singham has been handled very carefully. Rohit and Ajay’s magic is something to watch out for. Singham is one of Rohit’s best works. The action scenes are very well shot and the film is completely for the masses. But if you're looking forward to some good romantic moments between Ajay Devgn and Kajal, you'll be disappointed, as  they don’t click together. The action takes over the romance in the film. Go for it, if you want to catch one hell of an action flick!

The Tamil SINGHAM starring Suriya as a huge hit down South. But the adaptation for the Hindi audience, despite have its share of masala, isn't up to the mark. There's hardly any movement in the first half in terms of the story, while the second half has countless unintentionally funny scenes. With a lot of noise (read loud) and no substance, SINGHAM brings no khushi and only gham.
