Hollywood studios keen to produce films in regional languages in India

NEW DELHI | BANGALORE: For Tamil film lovers, Engaeyum Eppothum (everywhere, all the time) is a much-awaited yarn on the love lives of four men and women travelling on two buses. But for Vijay Singh, the Mumbai-based chief executive officer of Hollywood's Fox Star Studios' India operations, there is much more riding on the flick being co-produced by the studio. This is among the early regional language productions by a Hollywood studio.

And Singh believes "the success of the film could redefine the strategy of foreign production houses in the Rs 5,000-crore regional language film industry (non-Hindi)".

In another part of Mumbai, Bhojpuri actor and film producer Ravi Kishan is deep in talks with an international production house. "Hollywood studios are trying to understand the Bhojpuri market and are looking at co-production opportunities," he says.

Around 75 Bhojpuri movies made every year generate more than Rs 200 crore in revenues. This is growing at 20% annually. Nearly 35 crore people watch Bhojpuri movies across northern India and overseas.

It's a similar story in other languages - 150 Tamil films and 120 Telugu flicks grossed over Rs 500 crore each. Nearly 60% of India's Rs 8,750-crore film revenues come from regional films, according to analyst estimates.

"One hit could open the floodgates for global production houses," says Jehil Thakkar, head (media & entertainment), KPMG India. "Fox, Viacom18 and Disney are waiting to produce films in Bangla, Malayalam and Bhojpuri."

Singh says Fox is discussing more coproduction deals in Tamil, Bangla and Malayalam. Walt Disney India released the Telugu fantasy adventure Anaganaga-O-Dheerudu in January. It was a co-production with K Raghavendra Rao.

"Once Disney completes the acquisition of UTV (its partner), it is expected to expand its presence in regional languages," says a senior executive with an Indian production house.

UTV is already focusing big on Tamil and Telugu," the executive says. Walt Disney India declined comment. Viacom18 is scouting for opportunities in Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Punjabi.

"We are negotiating various business models with regional partners to enter the regional language movie space in the next 4-5 quarters," says Vikram Malhotra, chief operating officer at Viacom18 Motion Pictures. Warner Bros Pictures India signed a pact with Soundarya Rajnikanth's Ocher Studios for making 'live action' south Indian language films in 2008, but nothing has come of it yet. A Warner Bros India spokesperson did not comment on future plans.

Fox Star Studio's Engaeyum Eppothum, which releases on September 16, has been co-produced with AR Murugadoss, who directed Ghajini. It has worked out a backward integration model with Star's regional channel Vijay to promote the film. Singh says the first two songs of the movie have already made it to the Top 10 charts in Tamil.

Hollywood studios started their discovery of India by dubbing their flicks in Hindi and local languages. Nearly 40-50% of their local revenues now come from global flicks dubbed in Indian languages. Next, they tried their hand at Hindi films. The Shah Rukh Khan-starrer My Name is Khan, which was distributed by Fox Star Studio, was a blockbuster.

Hrithik Roshan: My Agneepath is not a remake

Actor Hrithik Roshan, who plays the protagonist in filmmaker Karan Johar's tribute to his father Yash Johar's 1990 cult film " Agneepath" by the same name, said that he does not like remakes but agreed to take up this project because it has very little resemblance to the original.
https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAZJ3LOFKIqM4pUXCTHo-e_GbBk_EbZR3G2gY3sw0UHcM_hTR2OL2ILqCHvmMZ_aXZX4ZKNaUZOEbO1IOCtRmJEBNYCWnUH9AZEoQSLZMZz6cu0JCsK7zCVxho4B8UxJNtz7kcEKbRY9Y/s400/Hrithik+Roshan+First+Look+For+Agneepath.jpg
This version of the film is conceived and directed by Karan Malhotra. "I was never interested in doing remakes, I am still not interested in doing remakes and I don't think I will ever do a remake. When I was narrated the script, in 10 miniutes he made me forget that it was a remake and made me forget all the symbolic visuals I had in mind and I just reacted as an actor. I am very, very proud to be associated with this film," Hrithik told reporters at the launch of the first teaser of the film here Monday.
"I am just driven by my instincts. Whatever my mind says, my instincts just take over. He just made me forget about all the emotions I had about this film and he took me to a completely different world, with a completely new character," he added The original "Agneepath" directed by Mukul Anand, wasn't commercially successful but gave an iconic character Vijay Deenanath Chauhan that fetched megastar Amitabh Bachchan a National Award for Best Actor. Asked if he had reprised any traits of the original character, Hrithik said: "I didn't have any reference point. I only had what Karan (Malhotra) had written in the script and it was absolutely a new space, which was a good thing, as I didn't want to have a reference point." Hrithik maintains that if he had to compete with Big B, he would have definitely failed. "If the competition had been in my mind then I would have definitely failed. For me it's just another character," said Hrithik. Releasing Jan 12, 2012, the film also features actor Sanjay Dutt, Rishi Kapoor and actress Priyanka Chopra in pivotal roles.

Don 2 in 3D as well..

Good news for SRK's fans..
Shahrukh Khan’s much awaited Don 2 releases this Christmas and the action-thriller just got bigger and better!
Ritesh Sidhwani the co-producer of Don 2 has just announced that the film will be released in both 2D and 3D formats.
Talking about Don 2 in 3D, Sidhwani said “There is huge demand for the brand DON, also our audiences must be expecting much more and beyond just cinema from the sequel so hence a 3D format. We did a few 3D conversion tests on DON 1 (2006) and the conversion outcome was very very good.. So while shooting for Don 2, the 3D conversion was at the back of Farhan’s (Akhtar) mind while shooting the film incase we decided to go ahead with 3D format as it would make the Don experience even more memorable and exciting to watch for the audience. I was in LA (Los Angeles) recently and saw some 3D conversion tests and was blown by it.. So decided to go ahead and convert Don2 into a 3D format”
There is a huge market for 3D films in India with the 3D versions of films like Avatar and Harry Potter recording huge business. Even the limited budget Haunted 3D directed by Vikram Bhatt was a HIT because its 3D version did super business.
Shahrukh Khan’s other release this year Ra One will also be released in 3D.
Don 2 directed by Farhan Akhtar will release during the Christmas holiday weekend. The film starring Shahrukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Lara Dutta also has a special appearance by Hrithik Roshan. Don 2 will also be dubbed in Tamil and Telugu.

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu First look

They had fun shooting with each other for the first time and it shows in the first look of Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor’s romantic film Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, earlier titled Short Term Shaadi.

Set in the amazing locales of Las Vegas, the film, as the title suggests, is a love story based in the city where the saying goes - What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. That’s the only place in the US where one can marry and annul the marriage the same day. In the film Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, Kareena Kapoor plays a hairstylist settled in the US. For the role, producer Karan Johar wanted a very uber cool Kareena, so he suggested her to cut her hair short.

Imran plays Rahul, an obsessive-compulsive architect who can’t tolerate anything out of place from the crease on his pants to the right amount of shine on his shoes. He falls in love with Kareena, a liaison which changes him completely, as she teaches him about life and love.

The film takes place in a compressed time frame of a little more than a week and deals with how the characters change within that short span of time. Directed by Shakun Batra, who previously assisted on blockbusters such as Rock On and Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na, the film Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is expected to be a hilarious love story but not without emotional quotient.

The film also stars Boman Irani and Kareena’s father Randhir Kapoor in pivotal roles, and is set for a 10th February 2012 release. Karan Johar today revealed the changed name on twitter, as the film’s working title was Short Term Shaadi

Aamir Khan avoids doing a TV show by Shah Rukh Khan's production house

Aamir Khan avoids doing a TV show because it is produced by Shah Rukh Khan's production house

The cold war between Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan shows no signs of thawing. The two are well known for taking potshots at each other, especially when either of their films is up for release.

Now, the rivalry has been taken up a notch.

Aamir Khan has apparently refused to be a part of UTV Star's show Live My Life, which tracks a celeb's life for a day, simply because it is being produced by SRK's Red Chillies Entertainment!

"They wanted to kickstart the show with Aamir because the concept of the show has been generating a lot of attention, and obviously a big name would give it that much of a boost.

Aamir is doing so well these days that he couldn't have been a better name to commence the show with. But unfortunately things did not work out, " says a source.

Interestingly, no one thought Aamir would refuse the show as he has a very good relationship with the company.

In fact, some of the actor's biggest films have been co-produced by UTV. But apparently after initially agreeing to be part of Live My Life, the deal fell through when he learnt of SRK's involvement.

The last time we saw the actors on one platform was at the premiere of Aamir's Three Idiots in 2009, where both of them maintained that all is well.

But, clearly, with all three Khans (the third being Salman of course) being at loggerheads when it comes to films, it's not a surprise that it trickles down to other areas of work, too.

However, our source claims, "Imran Khan is part of the show now, so I guess that was not really a problem. Aamir has been pretty busy with his own TV show that he hasn't had the time to look elsewhere."

Hottie from Hollywood as the female lead opposite Aamir Khan in 'Dhoom 3'

Katrina Kaif's exit from YRF's Dhoom 3 has come as a shocker for many. But according to a recent buzz producer Aditya Chopra and director Vijay Krishna Acharya are now looking forward to cast a hottie from Hollywood as the female lead opposite Aamir Khan.

The stars they are actually considering to rope in for their film are Oscar winner Natalie Portman, Spanish superstar Penelope Cruz and Eva Longoria of Desperate Housewives fame.

Confirming the buzz to a leading daily, a source said, “The names you mention are definitely in the list. Yashraj has never worked with an international star in any of its films.

The production house has now decided to take the ‘Dhoom’ franchise to a global level. One safe and effective way of going global would be the casting of a Hollywood hottie.

The role will involve sporting swimwear and a passionate kissing scene with Aamir; the parts that Katrina had problems with and thus failed to land the dream role. ”

When contacted, Yashraj’s official spokesperson also confirmed the news and said, “Yes, as of now some new international options are being considered.”

Mahie's 'Not A Love Story' filmed with a mobile phone

Mahie Gill's supermarket scenes in RGV's film were shot on a high-end mobile phone

Ram Gopal Varma seems to have reinvented himself as a filmmaker in every aspect.

Apart from shooting Not A Love Story, inspired by the Neeraj Grover murder case, on a digital camera to cut down costs, the director has filmed the mall scenes with a high-end mobile phone.

A source associated with the film tells us they couldn't smuggle small digital cameras inside a Malad supermarket to shoot the scenes of Mahie Gill buying polythene bags and a big kitchen knife.

"The camera had to be deposited before entering the premises.

So Zaryan Patel, the cameraman, suggested shooting with an iPhone4, " reveals our source, adding that only two people went in to shoot the scene.

He adds, "Obviously, Ramuji couldn't go anywhere near the place as he'd be recognised. So, armed with the phone, the cameraman shot Mahie's scenes inside HyperCity. And in 15 minutes, they were out."

Later, when the filmmaker saw the footage, he was impressed.

"Ramuji felt that the footage looked like it had been shot on CCTV cameras, so he decided to treat the scenes accordingly in the movie, " explains our source, further informing that the footage from the high-end mobile phone was edited to make the 10-second scene in the movie.

Confirming the same Mahie said, "The whole film is shot in guerrilla style. However, for this particular scene, we were a bit scared of getting caught. Thankfully, it went smoothly and the result is looking, good too."

Spy Kids 4: All The Time In The World Review

Ratings:3/5 Reviewer:Nikhat Kazmi Site:TimesOfIndia

Fun all the way, Spy Kids 4 not only successfully carries the franchise forward, but makes for pleasant family viewing with its fine blend of sci-fi, gizmo and gadgetry and vignettes on family values too. Of course, there are lots of things to recommend....Like, Jessica Alba who must be the most glamorous spy on board in her tights with a baby tied on to her.A roller-coaster ride all the way. Spy Kids 4 is an entertaining weekend watch.

Even if Spy Kids 4 is targeted at the kids, it takes its audience too lightly. Usually, such action-adventure films don't have a story and it's futile to look for one. What they have is a concept in place of a story and it must be reminded that even concepts divested of engagement with emotions are not worth it. Spy Kids 4 falls into the category of hype over heft.

Rodriguez, who knows how to have fun with a film and imbue it with the joy, makes no pretence of trying to do anything here apart from hoping that the past three Spy Kids and the addition of a fourth dimension in the form of a card will do the trick. Time may be speeding up in the film, but chances are, you will find yourself counting minutes to the end.

What’s Good: The performances of the kids – Rowan Blanchard and Mason Cook; the funny lines spoken by Argonaut, the (speaking) family dog. What’s Bad: The underdeveloped script; the zero value addition by the 4D element (smell); absence of appealing costumes and gadgets, which were the hallmark of the previous Spy Kids films.VerdictSpy Kids: All The Time In The World is a below-average fare. Apart from a section of the audience in the cities, it will find no appreciation at the Indian box-office.Watch or Not?: Watch only if your kids insist.

The Devil's Double Movie Review

Ratings:3.5/5 Reviewer:Rajeev Masand Site:IBNLive
Loosely based on the true story of Latif Yahia, a former Iraqi soldier who was forced to become the body-double for Saddam Hussein’s psychotic son Uday,The Devil’s Double is a thrilling, revolting, yet consistently fascinating watch. Treating the film like a lurid thriller, director Lee Tamahori goes for an audacious tone and a breakneck pace, grabbing your attention from the very word go. The violence is visceral and repulsive and yet you can’t help watching, transfixed as you are by Uday’s terrifyingly unpredictable personality. On the flip side, despite a knockout ‘dual’ performance by Dominic Cooper – who plays Uday as a power-crazy psychopath, and Latif as a petrified pawn – The Devil’s Double runs out of steam towards the end, and feels at least fifteen minutes too long.I’m going with three-and-a-half out of five for The Devil’s Double. It’s got a daring central performance, and works well as a thrilling potboiler. Don’t miss it!

What’s Good: Dominic Cooper’s performance; the high drama between the two main characters. What’s Bad: The loopholes in the screenplay; the abundance of graphic and violent scenes that will put the majority of Indian audiences off; the botched climax.VerdictThe Devil’s Double is a good fare but its unusual subject and lack of face value will seal its fate at the box-office.Watch or Not?: Watch it for Dominic Cooper’s extraordinary performance in a double role.

Iraq under Saddam and the first Gulf War is indeed a fascinating story but 'The Devil's Double' spends more time inside Uday's bedroom, including on a woman (Sagnier) who not surprisingly guesses Yahia's secret and falls for him, taking unbelievable risks in the process.Iraq may have never got the hero it needed against Uday but Hollywood obviously can't do without a beefy, good-looking knight in shining armour.

Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande Movie Review

Ratings:3/5 Reviewer:Taran Adarsh Site:BollywoodHungama
SAHI DHANDHE GALAT BANDE highlights the plight of land owners who are told to sacrifice their land in the name of development. The movie not only highlights the issue, but also brings to light the nexus between politicians and industrialists. The story depicts the frantic efforts of land owners on one hand and the exploitation and manipulation by industrialists on the other, who use their clout and finances to acquire the land. On the whole, SAHI DHANDHE GALAT BANDE is what I would call a topical, socially responsible, thought-provoking cinema. A film that has scope for discussions and debates. It addresses, quite successfully at that, an existing critical issue that the country faces -- the effect of dislodgment of people. A decent watch!

Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande is a topical film, this one's an interesting directorial debut by actor Parvin Dabas who captures on screen the recent farmer's agitation in places like Nandigram, Singur, Bhatta Parsaul and several other rural belts which are being grabbed by industrialists and commercial land developers. Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande does have some rough edges and tends to meander a bit. Too many fringe characters and sub-plots tend to divert attention from the main issue. Nevertheless, there is an earnestness of intent and loads of meaningful content which makes for interesting viewing. The high point of the film are its performancesA serious and sensible debut film by director Parvin Dabas, Sahi Dhande Galat Bande is offbeat and fresh

SAHI DHANDHE GALAT BANDE begins promisingly with a prologue on land acquisition, best manifested in the Singur-Tata controversy, actor Parvin Dabas' first shot at writing-direction turns the serious issue into a high school joke within minutes. At best,SAHI DHANDHE GALAT BANDE is a small-minded attempt at tackling an issue that either the director has read only sparingly or has not understood with all its complexitiesParvin's handling of a potentially relevant subject-matter gives away his inexperience, particularly his immaturity in writing. This is one of those films in which the themes resonate perfectly but are executed with the flawed flair of a child. There are moments here in which you simply can't repress a grin -- so embarrassingly infantile are they.

The film caters to a niche audience. In spite of being packed with brilliant performances and a powerful story, it needs a tad bit more oomph to create the right effect. 'Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande' is not a movie for the masses.Parvin Dabas' directorial debut tells a powerful story, which is both relevant to recent times and is light at heart too. The screenplay has a slow start but picks up pace eventually. 'Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande' keeps the story simple but fails to create an impact. There is a very clear message in the film but it is not powerful enough. On the whole, the movie is not a box office spinner and may not be able to create an impact. However, it will make a good DVD watch.

The budget is low, so technical finesse isn’t exactly the order of the day, while the tempo falls slightly in the second half. But at a little over two hours, there’s rarely a dull moment in Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande. Keeping up the tradition of small-budget films that impress with good stories over the last couple of years,Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande is a film that can be enjoyed without the baggage of exceedingly high expectations. It’s a bit like a pocket dynamite - small, but effective.
