Shah Rukh-Shirish patch up

After a tumultuous day of muck-flying and titanic tweeting battle-scarred party-bashers Shah Rukh Khan and Shrish Kunder called it a truce on Tuesday afternoon, courtesy Shrish's brother-in-law Sajid Khan and Shah Rukh's wife Gauri Khan.

Apparently Sajid and Gauri called for a meeting at Shah Rukh Khan's residence Mannat between the two warring parties. Over a hot meal and cool discussion, the acrimony was wiped clean.

Apparently Shah Rukh and Shirish have decided to start their rapport all over again.

Confirming the reconciliation at Mannat Sajid Khan said, "Yes, I felt terrible about the ugly turn that the whole affair took. Shah Rukh and Shirish had a fight, agreed. But the media didn't have to play it up to the point of making it on the front of national newspapers."

Getting sentimental Sajid Khan says, "Do you know when my sister Farah and Shirish got married there were only three witnesses. Me, Sajid Nadiadwala and Shah Rukh. We're family. And there're bound to be differences between family members. Yes, Gauri and I took the initiative. All of us met at Mannat over a meal. And it was all sorted out."

Adds Farah Khan, "I can't begin to tell you how relieved I am. This had turned really ugly. And before it got uglier my brother took matters into his hands.Full credit to Gauri for making the reconciliation happen. When my brother asked her where we should meet she said Mannat ,because she said it's Farah's home. I am so moved."

Farah says this is not only the end of the ugly spat between her husband and Shah Rukh, it is also a new beginning for her and Shah Rukh. "I really liked what he said. He made us promise to wipe out all the bitterness of the last two years and start afresh.I feel like a big burden is off my back."

All is well that ends well.

Hrithik filming for 'Krrish 2' in Hyderabad

He's the man of the moment and his his phone hasn't stopped buzzing with congratulatory calls from his well-wishers in the industry and fans, thanks to his intense performance in Karan Malhotra's 'Agneepath'.

And Hritihik Roshan is already busy shooting for his dad's home production and 'Krrish' sequel, 'Krrish 2', in Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad.

A source informed that a massive set that replicates Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex has been set up for 'K2' over a period of few months in the Film City. The film's lead pair, Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra, are in Hyderabad for the film's shooting.

The actor tweeted, "Gratitude 4 all d love that keeps pouring my way...thank u! Time now to reset to zero n build up to my next firewalk!! En route hyderabad Krrish3 - wish me luck guys! Cheers!", just three days after Hrithik visited cinemas in Mumbai to get a taste of the audience's response towards 'Agneepath'.

Shah Rukh Khan's scuffle with Farah Khan's husband

It was a fight that had a long history to it. On Sunday night-Monday Morning at the Aurus restaurant in the suburbs of Mumbai,Sanjay Dutt hosted a party to celebrate the success of his Agneepath role and film.
Guests were having a ball when at around 4.30 am Shah Rukh Khan entered the venue straight after the Filmfare awards with three bodyguards. According to eyewitnesses he was apparently in an inebriated condition.
Soon, he headed towards filmmaker Shirish Kunder and roughed him up.
Says an eyewitness, "We didn't know what was happening. We saw SRK enter. Then we saw him head towards Shirish from behind the director. SRK pulled Shirish down to the ground by his long hair. We were all shocked. We had never seen SRK behave this way before. Before anyone could react Baba Dewan the owner of Aurus ran in and intervened. SRK told Dewan to keep out . Dewan said the place belonged to him and he must intervene. The fight would've been prolonged had Sanjay Dutt not pulled SRK away from the ugly scene."
The shell-shocked Kunder apparently left immediately. We tried to probe the cause for Shah Rukh's provocation.
Says a source close to Kunder, "Shah Rukh was smarting since Kunder made a sarcastic comment on SRK's Ra.1 when it released. But the immediate provocation was apparently a comment that Kunder made about SRK and Priyanka Chopra at the party that SRK overheard. But that is hogwash. Kunder didn't say anything about Priyanka. Why would he? Everyone was there to celebrate a success, not to create ugliness. "
Kunder and Shah Rukh have a history , of course. Kunder's wife Farah Khan was one of Shah Rukh's closest friends. They fell out a year back. Kunder, we believe, faced the brunt of SRK's pent-up wrath at Dutt's party.
Farah who was shooting all night for Bela Sehgal's Shirin Farhah Ki Nikal Padi got to know of the fight only when she returned home in the morning.
Shocked and hurt Farah says, "Shah Rukh has always told me that physical abuse is the worst way to sort out a problem, and that it means the person who's hitting has either a personal or professional crisis going on.It saddens me to see him doing the same."
A theory doing the rounds is that Sanjay Dutt too joined Shah Rukh to bash up Shirish Kunder.
Rubbishing this rumour Dutt told me, "I didn't join in the fight. I sorted out the fight between Shah Rukh and Kunder."

Agneepath Movie Review

It’s Hrithik Roshan who redefines this Agneepath. He plays the character without the flourish that Bachchan brought, turning him into a ruthless machine for revenge, yet shouldering layers of hurt, pain and rage that make you match step with him on his journey.I’m going with three out of five for director Karan Malhotra’s Agneepath. It is in the end, an old-fashioned revenge drama treated in that melodramatic, over-the-top style. You’re not likely to be bored by the intense action and the solid performances, but prepare to be exhausted by just how long this film plays on.

AGNEEPATH is an uncomplicated story of revenge, is hard-hitting yet entertaining, dwells on strong emotions and aggressive and forceful action, yet is dissimilar from the original. Most Hindi films initiate with a bang, but run out of gas by the time they reach the finale, often getting deflated in between as well, but AGNEEPATH is vigorous from the very commencement to the absolute conclusion. The conflict at the very initiation and also towards the closing stages, the tension between Vijay and Kancha and also between Vijay and his mother, the game of one-upmanship played by Vijay to grab power… AGNEEPATH is one exhilarating ride. A vendetta story needs to be garnished with several terrific dramatic moments and Malhotra does just that. His handling of the subject deserves brownie points. The only 'hiccup', if one may say so, is the romantic track towards the first hour, which is lackluster. On the whole, AGNEEPATH is a fitting tribute to the masterwork.

New Agneepath take an altogether fresh approach to its 22-year-old source. Remakes, however, are a slippery territory. They invite inevitable comparison and yet aspire for an exclusive identity. Moreover what can possibly work in place of Bachchan and his trademarks in an old hat plot riding on themes like Baap ka badla and Maa-bahen ki izzat? The answer is two massive, hysterical villains. Dharma Productions' Agneepath redux, to be fair, belongs to Rishi Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt .Like its original, Agneepath is loud and lengthy revenge sage. And while not as blood-soaked or explicit, it bombards the screen with its escalated, larger-than-life tone, vivid colours and robust imagery. The weaknesses of the original are the failings of this one too -- songs, women and Gaitonde. To me, that's exactly how Agneepath works, less of a remake, more of a tribute. They should have just called it Dharmapath.

What’s Good: The arresting screenplay; the performances of the cast; the Chikni Chameli song; the raw action; the canvas, the making and the shot takings; the direction. What’s Bad: The excessive violence, blood and gore; the film is very heavy and a bit too lengthy.Verdict: Agneepath is a surefire hit, no questions asked! It will shake the box-office today (Republic Day) and in the first weekend.Watch or Not?: Watch it for so many reasons but be prepared for gore and violence… plenty of it!

Comparisons are damned. This *is* the new Agneepath. Though it shares a name with the original and begins with a flashback, Bachchan’s larger-than-life- surma-rimmed Vijay Dinanath Chauhan is a page in movie history. A new one begins with this Agneepath.Watch Agneepath because this one is unadulterated Bollywood entertainment. I’ll go with three stars and add half a star for the sheer excitement palpable in those who I watched the film with, first show this morning. Near packed attendance, hearty applause and complete silence in parts.

Remakes are tricky affairs. Expectations are invariably high and comparisons are inevitably made. But the new Agneepath isn't a cyclostyled copy of the 1990 film. The new movie walks its own line. New characters emerge. There's both style and craft in the way he builds the film's opening and closing scenes. You feel you are in the middle of a real execution. And he gets honest work from the acting ensemble,Try to wipe out the movie's earlier version from your mind. You might find it more enjoyable.

With Bollywood being obsessed with remakes in recent times, Agneepath is an important lesson on how to pay proper tribute to the original. Despite the original being his home production, Karan Johar attempts playing with fire (treading uncharted territory) with Agneepath and emerges victorious. Agneepath has the fire for a lustrous entertainer!

An earnest Vijay Dinanath Chauhan delivers poetic justice before a nearly packed hall on the proverbial 'first day first show'. Audiences at my cinema respond to the cues and lines. The comments passed sometimes distract you from the screen. Everyone guffaws at the same time. This is the kind of genuine theatre experience, now getting rare, which remains most precious in the life of a film-goer. Reason can take over later. I had a ball!

Devoid of fluff, the hyperbole toned down, and shorter, Agneepath would have been a far superior film. In its present form, it packs in enough punch to warrant a viewing. How much you enjoy it, though, will be directly proportionate to how much melodrama you can withstand. Old school Hindi film lovers, however, are in for a treat.

The 2012 'Agneepath' becomes its own film, which works precisely because it’s both a tribute and a stylish re-invention of the 70’s-spilling-into-the-80s retribution formula.‘Agneepath’ is old style revenge drama which does well on the whole, despite its plot holes and a slackened second half, with executing genre conventions

first of all, current Agneepath isn’t the exact replica of the original one in terms screenplay. New entrants like Rauf Lala add new interesting dimensions to the story. This Hrithik-Sanjay starrer flick is a collage of some impactful moments but fitted in the most haphazard manner which makes it impact less at many moments. Stupendous performances, fresh storyline despite a remake, Chikni Chameli song and cinematography are strengths of the film. Music, editing, long duration are the weak points. On the whole, Agneepath totally rests on star power which will lure the cine-goers to halls but how far will it impress them remains to be seen.

TOI film critic Nikhat Kazmi passes away

Times of India's film critic Nikhat Kazmi lost a bitter battle with cancer on Friday morning. Narayani Ganesh, her longtime colleague and Editor of The Speaking Tree pays her a tribute.

When I went up to Nikhat in her cubby hole on the third floor with the proposal that she write for the new 'happy' Sunday newspaper that was to launch soon, she didn't bat an eyelid. "Sure," she said, smiling. "How many words do you want and what's the deadline?" And so the very first issue of the Sunday Speaking Tree on February 28, 2010, was launched with Nikhat's story as its lead.

In 'Reel Soup For The Soul' she effortlessly walked the reader through deep spiritual insights that ran like subterranean streams beneath the plots in recently released films like Avatar, The Dark Knight, My Name Is Khan and Three Idiots. And the last issue of that year, on December 26, once again had Nikhat sharing her views on why we are no longer shy of admitting shades of grey in our celluloid heroes. She called it 'Nothing Absolute,'-- referring to films like Dabangg, Rajneeti, Raavan, The Immortal, Inception and Wall Street 2 whose protagonists, unlike conventional 'good boy' heroes, revealed negative streaks.

Nikhat Kazmi might have grown to become an iconic film critic through the columns of The Times of India but to most of us in the Times family, the taciturn lady from Allahabad was an ever-obliging colleague. She would happily pitch in with stories or editorials on entertainment, drawing on her daunting reserve of information from having seen thousands of films and interacted with as many creative people from the industry.

From reporter and special correspondent to head of The Sunday Times of India (STOI), Delhi Times and more recently the Newspaper In Education edition of TOI, her versatility as writer and editorial leader has never been in question.

A colleague who was a rookie foreign affairs desk person when Nikhat was leading STOI recollects one Saturday night when she failed to make the designated page despite the deadline drawing dangerously close. Unable to deliver, she went to Nikhat and confessed, wringing her hands in despair.

"Nikhat was so cool," she remembers. "All she said was, 'Show me the page. Here, put this picture there; cut four lines from here, shorten that heading...' Lo and behold, it was all done in a matter of minutes. She could have yelled at me or something, but she didn't."

Always elegantly turned out, she would acknowledge your greeting with a nod, her kohl-lined eyes creasing into a smile that would vanish just as soon as it appeared, as she focused on work at hand. Her trademark attire was those neatly starched chikan-worked kurtas and churidars and long skirts when she was not the lady in black.

We'll miss you Nikhat.

Players Movie Review

Ratings:2.5/5 Reviewer:Rajeev Masand Site:IBNLive
There’s an uncomfortable truth about Abbas-Mustan’s latest film Players that few critics will admit to – it’s not all bad! This fast-paced khichdi of two previous Italian Job movies and the director duo’s own last film Race has so much going on all at once that you’re left with little time to dwell on the gaping plot holes, the laughable dialogue, and the wooden performances. Unlike Don 2 recently, which openly aped action scenes and the very look and feel of polished Hollywood blockbusters, Players is a distinctly Bollywood-ised remake that celebrates its corny humor, and even throws a love-triangle into a heist plot.I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five for Abbas-Mustan’s Players. What could have been a satisfying entertainer doesn’t quite achieve its potential.

First things first! PLAYERS is an escapist fare, packed with ingredients that are considered mandatory in a Bollywood film. PLAYERS stays true to their style, but the twists here aren't the type that shock, amaze or astonish. One of the twists -- about the double crosser -- does catch you by surprise, but the remaining ones don't and that's where the screenplay falters. It's a screenplay of convenience. The manner in which the gang sets out to execute the heist in Russia seems like a cakewalk or child's play, which is so damn difficult to absorb. On the whole, PLAYERS rides mainly on the clout of its credible director duo [Abbas-Mustan], daredevil stunts and stunning visuals. But, most importantly, it is deficient of a captivating screenplay. Also, the film could have done with judicious trimming for an enhanced impact. I for one went in with colossal expectations, but came out feeling downcast and disheartened.

The Italian Job has been entertaining its viewers as amongst Hollywood's most fascinating thriller films. Can you expect something like this from our desi Players, a supposedly Indian vision of the Italian Job? Eventually, it is Neil Nitin Mukesh (Spider), the ultimate no-strings-attached man, wild gambler at heart with a twist in the soul and tango in the feet, who slam dances his way away as the ultimate crook. Music by Pritam is good while it lasts. Some editing sorely needed, visual imagery quite polished, and the look as usual is of new age Bollywood. All you brave Indian filmmakers, do pick up classics, but first, get a bit classic yourself and learn about cult film making which is so much different from commercial cinema. You'll find the difference. Your Bollywood ventures like Players end up like cold cuts - stylishly done - are so different from piping hot goulash.

The real problem with Players this official remake of The Italian Job is that instead of reproducing a perfectly nuanced screenplay as it is, it tries to act too smart, with excessive elements and needless tampering, in the process making a complete fool of itself. Why can't you stick to the plan, Bollywood? What you can rely on is the same old zigzag slyness that is more Race than Italian Job. Luckily the action sequences, while not many, aren't too bad. Did I say lacklustre? That's also how I'd sum up most of the Players of this rather long enterprise. For Abhishek Bachchan, the wise guy with a smirk, stubble and sun glasses, this is a role he can now play in his sleep. I have an inkling he is.

Desi versions of Hollywood thrillers are like ‘first copy’ bootlegs from Thailand. They initially look approximately the same but later the threads begin to wriggle out. So when director duo, Abbas-Mustan took on ‘The Italian Job’ with Players, Benny Hill became Neil Nitin Mukesh, everyone double-crossed and obvious lines were exchanged with a grim face.  But our bad boys are, firstly, not all boys and their badness is mostly restricted to the leather jackets rented from MJ’s ‘Bad’ music video. But a remake of ‘The Italian Job’ which makes the defining chase sequence look like a rickshaw chugging over monsoon-corroded roads refutes both these rationales. Players is definitely a job taken not so seriously.

Players, the official remake of Hollywood’s heist flick The Italian Job (itself a remake of a British caper film of the same name) is no frame-by-frame copy. There’s enough desi masala to make it an entertaining action flick.Players ends up as a fun weekend flick, especially for action buffs.n the second half, the movie meanders and you almost wish Abbas-Mustan would have trimmed some of the desi fat to enhance the impact of the movie.I’ll go with 3 stars for this out-and-out entertaining flick.

Well, Abbas-Mustan are those students who indeed copy from a topper, and still manage to fail. The duo would have been better off making their own original film. Because when you've watched the original, there are some expectations, and Players fails to even deliver a decent Bollywood version of the original. The awful acting, painful dialogues and tedious special effects do not help the cause of this washed out Bollywood remake. The saving grace of the film happens to be its action, but it can only earn the film half a star. Players is a forgettable experience and it has to be the worst to come out of Abbas-Mastan’s stables

'Players’ comes off as a dismal first for Abbas-Mustan, with a flat script, flatter action scenes, and the flattest bunch of actors, all milling about in one film. You’d think with a ready tried-and-tested template, and Abbas-Mustan’s own skill-sets, ‘Players’ would keep things ticking swiftly over, at the very least. But practically from the beginning, dreariness settles upon the film, and refuses to lift. The A-M ingredients are all there. Characters with loose morals, women with too-tight, too-few clothes, item numbers where the twain twine. But the sharpness is missing. The badass-ness is missing. And the fun is missing.

Touted to be an official remake of Italian Job, Players however, cries out a difference as the story is served with a desi tadka. Also, new dimensions in terms of characterization have been added. Also, Players is technologically well-advanced than original Hollywood flick although, original is rich in terms of content. But, the flipside is the length of the film and performances which leaves an intelligent direction in dilemma. The lack of energy in the actors barring Bipasha and Neil leaves on yawning at most of the times. Direction by Abbas-Mustan, Cinematography and edgy plotline are the strong points. Music, dialogues, performances besides Bips and Neil are the weak points. On the whole, Players is not flawless but can be given a shot for once.
