Real Steel Movie Review

Real Steel is equal parts noisy action movie, and father-son bonding drama. The boxing scenes are thrillingly filmed, including a classic David vs Goliath climax; it’s the film’s emotional journey that feels like pure cheese. But if Real Steel works, it’s purely and singularly on the strength of its hulking metal warriors that pack a solid, determined punch. I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five for Real Steel. The thunderous action alone makes up for the strictly standard storytelling.

A real steal, this new film from Hugh Jackman which is imbued with so much heart, so much soul and is so high-spirited, it brings you to your feet too to avidly cheer the proverbial underdog. Everything seems to fall into place in this film. The cross-country setting of desolate American towns coupled with the glitzy finale are spell-binding. But more importantly, it's the story and the screenplay (John Gatin) which cement the whole show together into a perfect whole. Anybody out there making a film on bots? This one's a classic on how to blend techno-splendour with high emotions, without going all mushy and sentimental. Sporty. Soft. Super. Scram for it.

For those of you raised on WWF and WWE, Real Steel could be a guaranteed return on your multiplex ticket. It's a good-looking film, with stunning visuals and slick production valuesReal Steel is the kind of film that gets its form right but the content horribly wrong. It's designed as a crowd-friendly project with a big, commercial hero, spectacular action sequences and robotic gimmicks and works to that end.

The story is a major disappointment; Real Steel isn’t all that bad. With its near-future setting, the rustic old-time America look is a welcomed sight over teeming Blade Runneresque metropolises. With its use of technology ranging from animatronics to motion capture, the effects work behind the film is totally convincing (More so, unfortunately, than Jackman’s accent at times) While Real Steel is better than Transformers (the difference here being the film in question definitely has a story), it is still too far predictable and unoriginal.

It's the proverbial David versus Goliath contest only instead of humans it's warrior robots who slug it out. A cross between the Rocky and Transformers films.Loosely based on a 1956 short story by Richard Matheson, director Levy (the two Night at the Museum movies) brings a human dimension to a tale that's essentially about metallic monsters pummeling each other to scrap.The script may be clogged with sports movie clichés but the action set pieces, including the thunderous final bout are handled with assurance. On the other hand, the loner protagonist's attempts to revive his relationship with his gym-owner girlfriend (Evangeline Lilly) are perfunctory.
